Overview

SPAR Nigeria formed part of a major supermarket expansion programme in a market with complex delivery conditions, developing infrastructure, and high coordination demands across multiple stakeholders.

Role

I led the project function for SPAR’s expansion in Nigeria, covering new business development, site evaluation, developer relationships, shopping centre negotiations, layout direction, equipment planning, procurement input, and rollout delivery.

Key challenge

The work required upstream commercial development as well as practical delivery control in a market where site origination, developer alignment, lease terms, procurement, infrastructure reliability, and programme pressure all had a direct effect on store opening performance.

Outcome

This work helped establish and expand the SPAR format in Nigeria across 17 stores, combining site origination, developer engagement, lease negotiation support, and coordinated rollout execution to move projects from opportunity stage into operational stores in a difficult operating environment.

This work included the delivery of Switzerland’s first EUROSPAR flagship in Schanis and supported the development of new in-store SPAR retail formats that strengthened the brand’s format direction and benchmarked future store development.
